LOCAL SEO — INNER WEST

Local SEO for Inner West service businesses

Marrickville, Newtown, Leichhardt, Balmain, Ashfield, Dulwich Hill, Burwood, Strathfield, Drummoyne and Five Dock. We're based in North Strathfield, most of our client work is in these suburbs, and this is the part of Sydney we know best.

THE LOCAL PICTURE

What the Inner West search market actually looks like

Old housing stock, a lot of trades, and a customer who checks you before they call.

The housing stock generates the demand

Federation terraces, semis and workers' cottages across Marrickville, Newtown, Petersham and Leichhardt mean constant renovation, waterproofing, rewiring, plastering and drainage work. The search volume here is not seasonal marketing — it is a hundred-year-old building stock that keeps needing things done to it.

Word of mouth still ends in a Google search

The Inner West runs on recommendations, and every one of them gets checked. Someone passes on your name at a barbecue in Dulwich Hill and the first thing that happens is a search for it. If nothing credible comes back, the referral quietly dies there.

The suburbs are small and the boundaries are blurry

Petersham, Lewisham and Stanmore sit within a kilometre of each other. Google still splits them. A page that only says Inner West will not rank for any one of them as well as a page that names the suburb.

Most competitors have a Google profile nobody maintains

Across the Inner West trades we audit, the pattern is almost always the same: a profile created years ago, no services listed, no posts, and the last review some time in 2023. That is not a hard position to beat.

INNER WEST CLIENTS

Two of these are down the road from us

Sydney Property Works is a licensed builder in Marrickville.

They now have a page for each service, the licence number on every one of them, and a site that names the suburbs they actually work in — Marrickville through to Kingsgrove, plus Croydon, Concord, Five Dock and Alexandria.

Pro Detailing Sydney, also in the Inner West, sits at 4.9 stars across 56 Google reviews and gets recommended by ChatGPT as well as by Google.

Two Inner West businesses, both found the same way: a page that says where they work, and a profile that stays maintained.

COVERAGE

The suburbs we cover, and what each one brings

The Inner West is not one market. It's four or five, and they search differently.

Marrickville, Dulwich Hill and Petersham

Terraces, semis and post-war stock under constant renovation. Builders, plumbers, electricians, plasterers, waterproofers and tilers. The strongest and steadiest trade search in the Inner West, and where we do most of our work.

Newtown, Enmore and Stanmore

Hospitality, creative studios, allied health and personal services on a dense strip with heavy foot traffic. Mobile search dominates, and the map pack decides most of it before anyone opens a website.

Leichhardt, Balmain, Rozelle and Annandale

Older, higher-value housing and a customer who researches properly before calling. Licences, insurance and finished work shown plainly on the page matter more here than a sharper headline.

Ashfield, Burwood, Croydon and Strathfield

Apartments alongside family housing, and a genuinely multilingual customer base. Strata, cleaning, property maintenance and professional services. Competition is lighter than further east and the searches are easier to win.

Drummoyne, Five Dock and Concord

Renovation-heavy and increasingly contested. Sits between the Inner West and the city, so businesses here often need to rank for both without saying Sydney on every page.

North Strathfield

Where we are. Our own Google profile and address sit here, which is why the Inner West is the part of Sydney we know best and where most of our client work happens.

THE WORK

What we do for an Inner West business

1

A page for each suburb you actually work in

Not a list in the footer. Real content about the work you do in Marrickville, or Balmain, or Ashfield — including the kind of buildings you work on, which is what separates a page that ranks from one that reads like a template.

2

Licence, insurance and finished work, on the page

Inner West customers check before they call. For trades, the licence number and the insurance position belong on every service page, not buried on an about page. It answers the question that decides the call.

3

A profile that stays maintained

Services itemised, hours correct, real job photos going up, Q&A answered. Against local competitors whose last review was two years ago, maintenance alone moves you up.

4

Reviews requested after every job

We give you your Google review link to put on every invoice, so asking becomes part of closing out the job. This is the single biggest lever for a trade in the Inner West, and almost nobody does it consistently.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Inner West local SEO, answered

Are you actually based in the Inner West?

Yes. Leadwave is in North Strathfield, and our own Google profile sits there. Most of our client work is in these suburbs — Sydney Property Works in Marrickville and Pro Detailing in the Inner West are both on our work page.

I get most of my work by word of mouth. Do I need this?

The referral still gets searched. Someone passes your name on and the next thing that happens is a Google search for it. A weak result doesn't stop the referral outright — it just makes the caller hesitate, and on a bigger job that hesitation turns into a second quote.

How many suburbs should I target?

Start with the two or three you actually want more work in, not the fifteen you'd technically drive to. A page that genuinely covers Marrickville will outperform six thin pages naming six suburbs, and it won't look like a doorway to Google.

My competitors have been around for twenty years. Can I get past them?

Often, yes. Long tenure in the Inner West usually comes with a Google profile that has not been touched since it was created. Consistent recent reviews and a maintained profile beat a dormant listing, whatever year it was set up.

How long before it works?

Google Maps visibility usually moves in 4 to 8 weeks. Organic rankings take 3 to 6 months. No one can guarantee either. Profile and review work moves first. Suburb pages and citations take longer and hold for longer.

Do you only do local SEO, or the website too?

Both, and they work better together. The local SEO service is the ongoing work; the website is what it runs on. Most Inner West clients start with a build and move onto the SEO once it's live.
